Devil Pays A Visit
Although previous Hall's were on this
spot, the current one was built by the Loftuses in 1870.
The Hall is not open to visitors but you can see the
home from the gates and read the plaque on one of the
gates that recalls ghostly experiences.
In the 17th century, then owner Charltes
Tottenham had just moved in with his family when a huge
storm hit. The wind was blowing so hard it was rattling
the windows and the chimney's howled like wolves from
the wind. The family closed the shutters, stoked the
fire and gathered around the fireplace to play a game
of cards.
Shortly thereafter there was a loud knocking
at the door and they found a stranger all in black with
a long cloak. He said his horse had thrown a shoe so
the family invited him to stay the night. He started
playing cards with the family when he accidently dropped
one of the cards in his hand. One of the daughtered bent
down and picked up the card and when she did, she noticed
the guest had a cloven foot. At this point she screamed
that the stranger in the house was the devil and as the
stranger prepared to attack the daughter Charles stepped
in front, made the sign of the cross and demanded in
the name of Jesus and all saints, commanded the devil
to depart. At this point, the devil disappeared but the
family was troubled by constant demons and evil spirits.
They eventually called in a local priest
by the name of Father Thomas Broaders who performed an
exorcism that banished the devil and evil spirits from
the home.
