The Home of Dylan Thomas
This house was home to the Treasurers of York Minister until the 12th century until 1546.
In 1953 when Henry Martindale was working on the plumbing in the home when he heard the sound of a trumpet. When he turned to see what was making the sound he was startled to see a horse walking through the wall with a Roman soldier riding it. About 16 other Roman soldiers folllowed, but each was cut off at the knees. It appeared that the group of soldiers had just come from a long battle that did not do well and they walked with their heads hung low. After walking across the room they dissapeared into the opposite wall.
Henry is not the only person to experience this ghost patrol as they are a rather common experience. Excavations of the property have revealed that under the home is an old Roman road and this would explain soldiers walking on the road, through the home would only be seen from the knees up.
