Lost Trinkets
The Berystede Hotel was built in 1870 for Henry
Noailles Widdrington Standish and his wife. On
Oct 27, 1886 the house caught fire and French maid
Eliza Kleininger ran back into the burning building
to recover a box of jewelery that she kept in her
room. Over the years, Mrs. Standish or ladies
that visited would give her small trinkets of jewelery
and she kept these in hopes of using them to provide
for herself in her retirement.
After the fire, the home remained in
shambles until 1903 when it was rebuilt as a hotel. Eliza
has chosen to continue on at the hotel and she is often
seen as a blue lady who wanders the halls and staircases,
apparently not able to retire without her trinkets.
