The Ghost of Lady's Walk
This manor dates back to 1380 when it belonged to the
Grey family. They continued to increase their property
until 1554 when the home was forfeited to the crown
and the house was leased by the de la Pole family who
later purchased the property. It is still the home
of the decendants, the Pole-Carews family but is run
by the National Trust.
The home contains the largest fireplace
in England which is 22 feet in width and takes up one
entire wall of a room.
With a home as old as the Shute Barton
Manor, you would expect many ghosts to reside within
its walls but apparently the home has only one ghost
a grey lady.
Some people believe the grey lady is
a de la Pole family member from the Civil War era who
was hanged by a group of Parlamentarians who ambushed
her as she walked through a grove near the house. The
property to this day contains a grove called Lady's
Walk in her honor.
The grey lady can often be found roaming
Lady's Walk and does not take kindly to strangers.
If you happen upon her she will give you an evil stair
before disappearing.
