High Society Forever
The original cottage that graced this property
in the 17th century fell into disrepair and was
demolished a a nice, but boring home was built
in its place by Thomas Cubitt. In 1906 the house
was purchased by Mrs. Ronald Greville who fit into
the socialite circle well. She set about remodelling
the home into something fit for entertaining kings
and queens and she did just that. Over her lifetime
the upper crust of society along with royality
graced its splendid rooms. When she died in 1942
she gave the home to the National Trust on condition
that the home be open to the public and this wish
was honored.
If you go on the Nun's Walk just inside
the woods you may experience a strange whistling sound
that many visitors here.
A strange figure can also been seen on
a wooden bridge by the ornamental garden a ghostly being
appears with a long brown robe and a hood. No one is
certain whether this ghost is male or female as it disappears
when you try to get too close to it.
