
Speak To Me
Originally the home of of black Augustine monks until dissolutio9n in 1539 it was sold to Sir John Byron. Sir John Byron decided to build a stately home beside the Abbey. Legend has it, is if you damage or deface a religious foundation, you and your decendants will forever be plagued with bad luck. Such was the fate of the Byron family. One of the ghosts said to wander the halls of Newstead abbey is the sister of the 5th Lord nicknamed the Devil Lord who refused to speak to his sister even as she lay wailing on her death bed for forgiveness. She wanders and wails loudly saying "Speak to me my lord, do speak to me". It is said however that her brother was insane and tried to ruin the house so that future heirs would not get anything worth having. When the 10 year old George Gordon Byron inherited was in total disrepair. He did not actually live in the home until after he graduated university but his parties in his youth are legendary. He would have parties that were close to being all out orgies and they would get drunk and drink from a skull chalice.
Inside the home next door to the Byron's bedroom is a gloomy little room known as the Prior's Oratory. People feel a sense of malice as they enter the room and it contains a portrait of of a black friar. Vistors to the room claim they feel threatened and several of the tour guides have become sick upon entering the room.
Many ghosts are said to haunt the Abbey including the Abbey's Black Friar who's appearance forwarns of tragedy is about to befall the family.. There is also a white lady who is accompanied by a sudden drop in temperature and the smell of rose petals.
