Ghosts Galore
An incredible specimen, this priory dates all the
way back to 1227 when it was owned by the Augustinians
until the Dissolution of the Monastaries in 1536
at which time it had many owners until it was finally
purchased by Thomas Sackville in 1599. They owned
it for the next 300 years during which it was rented
out to tenant farmers. In 1896 James Englington
Gwynne purchased the priory and set about the huge
task of restoring the Priory to its previous glory.
The Michelham Priory has the distinct
reputation of being one of the most actively haunted
houses. The Priory can get very exciting for those intent
on a ghostly experience, you may find apparitions manifest
itself in front of you, strange noises coming from all
over the house, a ghostly white horse galloping through
the gatehouse or even a man in a black cloak descending
from the ceiling. The gentleman is not the only person
seen walking down from the ceiling so it appears that
at some point there might have been a staircase there
and the ghosts are unaware it is no longer there.
The music room is said to be one of the
most haunted and investigators have heard the sound of
a harpsacord and it appears that ghosts will respond
to requests for them to make a sound.
You will also find odd characters and
an old lady in the upper room of the gatehouse. In April
2003, Kate Gearing a member of the Ghost Club took a
photograph and was delighted to find a bearded man in
the picture when no man was in the room.
