Rotting Ghost
Once the most haunted house in Derbyshire,
it has lost that designation because of declining activity
over the years. Now a bed and breakfast this 16th century
house can be booked for the night so that you can attempt
to experience paranormal activity. The amazing thing
about Highlow Hall is that a curse was placed on the
male members of the family. The story says that Sir Nicholas
Eyre courted the two sisters of the last male heir of
the house in hopes to gain the entire fortune up on his
death. He ended up choosing the eldest sister. The younger
sister was so distraught that she fled the home, never
to be seen again. One day the ghost of the girl appeared
before him. She cursed the male members of the family
and said that the wealth would only last 14 generations
after which time they would be forced to leave Highlow
Hall and lose thier fortunes. Oddly enough, as circumstance
would have it, the events said by the ghost did happen.
The Eyres became very wealthy lords of over 20 manors
but their fortunes declined and by 1842 they were bankrupt
and forced to leave highlow.
