A Black Bull & Black Hound
Hergest has fallen from glory and now it is basically nothing
more than a farm house. Many people are aware of the story
of The Hound of Baskervilles, but not many know that the
story was based upon Hergest Court and its hormer inhabitants,
who are now ghosts.
The story goes like this. Sir Thomas
Vaughn lived in the 15th century and was basically a
very evil man with a very loyal black bloodhound. Sir
Vaughn was decapitated on the battlefield in 1469 and
as soon as his head hit the ground you could hear his
hound howl. His hound then ran across the battlefield,
picked up his masters head in its mouth and headed back
to Hergest. They don't really say what happened to the
head after that, but Sir Vaughn was buried without the
head in Kingston church in the families creepy vault.
So the ghost of Vaughn turns into this
black bull and he basically terrorized the town along
with his dead black blood hound. Things got so bad that
the town was on the verge of collapse because everyone
was too afraid to leave their homes so they called in
the priests and after a very long exorcism,, the black
bull became the size of a blowfly which was then captured
inside a snuff box and buried under a heavy stone on
the bottom of the lake at Hergest.
Of course, this did not get rid of that
damned hound, and he continued on his rampage and causing
all kinds of trouble. The Vaughn family considered the
hound a harbinger of death. So if the hound made an appearance,
most likely one of them was not going to be of this earth
much longer. Eventually the entire Vaughn family became
extint, but the dog, well, he still stuck around. To
this day, some towns folk won't pass by the home when
it is dark because they believe the hound will come after
them.
