Lonesome Love
Hellens Manor dates back to around 1096 when it was granted
to the de Balun family. In 1301 it belonged to Lords Audley.
His nephew leased it to Walter Heylon, who gave his name
to the house and his decendants have lived in it ever since.
In the 17th century, Hetty Walwyn, youngest
daughter of then owner John Walwyn ran off and married
someone her family considered beneath her. By the time
she was 20 years old, her husband had diedand she went
home. Instead of being welcomed by her loving family,
they locked her in a bedroom for 30 years because they
believed she disgraced them. Hetty took it rather well,
spending her time gazing outdoors. She remained behind
at Hellens and is the most prominant ghost there.
Another ghost that resides at Hellens
is that of an eldery Catholic priest that was sheltered
by the family when Catholicism was outlawed. Soldiers
raided the home and found the priest who fled upstairs
to avoid them. He was cornered in Queen Mary's room (so
named because Mary Tudor stayed in it) and hacked him
to death.
