Owner or Housekeeper
Originally belonging to the Bishops of Ely, it
passed on to Henry VIII in 1553. In 1607 Robert
Cecil swapped houses with King James I and it remains
in the Cecil family to this day.
The haunting of Hatfield House is said
to be that of a coach with horses that appears at the
gates and then races up the drive and when it reaches
the house, it actually drives into it and up the grand
staircase and then disappears. Where this originates
is not known, but catching a glimpse of it would be a
remarkable event.
