Trip or Fall?
Hall's Croft gets its name from Dr. John Hall who
was married to Susanna, the eldest daughter of
William Shakespeare. The Hall's sold upon the death
of William Shakespeare at which time they moved
into Shakespeare's home. The home passed from owner
to owner, becoming professional offices of lawyers
and doctors and then a boys school before reverting
back to a home in 1913.
At that point the home was owned by Josephine
Macleod who lived there with her sister Betty Legett
who, in 1931 fell down the stairs and died. Her body
was laid out at the home and it is believed that it is
Betty's ghost that haunts the house. In fact, some wonder
if Betty is not trying to speak from the grave because
some visitors feel a "push" when they are at the top
of the stairs. Is she trying to make people fall down
the stairs like she did or is she trying to tell everyone
that she didn't fall, but was actually pushed down the
stairs?
In 2004 the famous team from the television
show Most Haunted, spent time at Hall's Croft and to
the astonishment of the live audience they watched a
spoon that was actually wired down to a table being flung
at the head of Yvette Fielding.
