Revenge of the Ghosts
Gainsborough Old Hall stands on the site of an
old castlethat King Sweyn of Denmark lived. It
is believed he died in 1014 as the result of years
of torment by the ghost of St. Edmund who had been
marytred
by the Danes 140 years prior.
The current manor was built between 1465 and 1485 and
King Sweyn can be heard moaning in the Great Hall where the foundations
of the original castle are buried. Another ghost is of a young lady,
the daughter of one of the owners who fell in love with a knight from
Newark Castle. Her father, not wanting his daughter to have a relationship
with the Knight, locked her in the tower. It is not known what happened
to her after her incarceration or even if she survived it, but her ghost
remains today, mourning the loss of true love.
