A Father's Nightmare
This manor dates back to the 12th century and although
it was once a grand building, over time it fell into
disrepair and was eventually just a farmhouse.
The home is considered to be one of
the most haunted homes in Europe with a number of ghosts
being seen about the property.
The most famous and well known of the
ghosts is Kate Oatway. The story goes that her grandfather
was a notorious wrecker. A wrecker would go to the
rocky shoreline during storms with a latern and try
to get ships to think the light was to show them safe
harbor from the storm. They would sail towards the
light and end up shipwrecked on the rocks at which
time he would then rob the ship of its bounty and murder
any survivors. during one such "wrecking" a beatiful
Spanish woman survived the wreck and the son of the
wrecker, Willian fell in love with the maiden and eventually
married her. They were very much in love and lived
as tennants in Chambercombe Manor as law abiding citizens
and they had a child, a girl by the name of Kate.
Williams main disappointment was his inability to save
enough money to buy Chambercombe Manor.
Kate grew up and eventually fell in
love with an Irishmane named Wallace who was the captain
of a pirate ship. After the couple married they went
to live in Dublin, Ireland and her parents missed her
dearly. They held on to the hope that one day their
lovely daughter would come back to visit them.
One day, after a particuarly viscious
storm William went down to the shore to see if any
ships were in distress. He heard a faint sound and
looked around to find a women barely alive on the rocks.
Her face was so covered in blood and suffered so much
damage is was impossible to distiguish her features.
Willian carried the woman home and
he and his wife tried to save the woman, but she died
shortly after without regaining consciousness. William
and his wife decided to check to see if she had anything
on her that would give him some clue as to who she
was and found she was wearing a money belt. Upon opening
it, William saw it was full of jewels and coin, more
than enough to buy his beloved Chambercombe. Although
he felt guilty about it, he ended up stealing the money
belt from the dead woman.
The very next day, a shipping agent
came to their door asking if they had seen a lady passanger
who had gone missing. William, confused and wanting
to keep the money denied knowing anything about the
woman because he feared they would know about the money
and he would have to return it. The agent left, and
said that if they should come across the missing Katherine
Wallace to contact him. It was at that moment that
they realised that it was their daughter that had died,
who had finally come home for a visit, and they had
stolen from her.
Unable to handle what they had done,
they put their daughter into a secret room, walled
it up and left Chambercombe Manor forever. In 1865
a tenant doing roof repairs noticed an outline of a
window that did not match any room in the house. He
and his wife realised there must be some sort of hidden
room in the house and went looking for it. They put
a hole in the wall and looked inside and saw a secret
chamber and went inside. There they found a bed with
the skeleton of Kate Wallace on it. Kate stayed behind,
for what reason no one will ever know. Is she there
because she promised her parents one day she would
return, or is she there because she is so broken hearted
that her parents stole from her.
Two small children can often be heard
and seen in the upstairs rooms and a phantom lady in
a long white dress has been seen near the pond.
Several other ghosts are said to haunt
the home including a friendly man that tried to possess
a medium during a seance.
