New Years Eve Murder
This Hall, a lovely example of Elizabethan architecture
has several ghosts that call it home. Sir henry
Griffith began building the home but alas he passed
on prior to the hall being finished. His three
daughters took on the task of completeling the
hall but it was his daughter Anne who fell in love
with the project and devoted her life to it. In
1620 once the building was complete Ann was attacked
and robbed. She was found and taken to her beloved
Burton Agnes Hall where she lingered in agony for
days before finanally passing on from her injuries.
Her dying wish was that her sisters keep her skull
at the hall so that a part of her would always
remain with the home and although they agreed they
ended up burying her entire body in the church
yard.
Anne did not take kindly to the fact her last wish was
not honored and she showed her anger by creating havoc in the home after
dark. Doors slammed shut, things crashed to the ground, footsteps paced
across the floor constantly and they could hear her whail and moan throughout
the night. After consulting the local vicar he advised them that they
must honor Anne's last wish. Her sisters had her body dug up and much
to their surprise her body was in perfect condition except for her head
which had decomposed and was just a skull. They brought back the skull
to Burton Agnes Hall where it remains to this day.
On two occasions the skull was removed from the hall.
On the first occasion later generations of the family buried the skull
on the garden but Anne would not allow that and began once again her
constant ghostly rampage so they brought it back inside., On the second
occasion a new servant threw it out of the window not understanding the
meaning. It was quickly retrieved. The skull was later bricked inside
a wall in the hall to prevent someone from removing it in the future.
Other ghosts at Burton Agnes Hall is a lady in a long
flowing dress that glides down the hall and into a bedroom and sits by
a fireplace and also a headless women that occasionally appears.
