The Largest Private Residence
Once the largest private residence in England, Oct 8,
1645 was the beginning of the end for Basing House. It
was besieged, pilaged, and set on fire. Male family members
were hanged. Any remaining stone was used by the village
people to rebuild thier own homes and Basing House remained
in ruins. How could something so tragic not leave behind
spirits unwilling to accept thier fate?
The ruins are said to be extremely haunted
by many spirits and the smell of smoke, probably from
the fire can often linger in the air. The spirits continue
to walk the grounds, somehow unable to understand the
home no longer exists.
