Starving Ape
The legend of Athelhampton Hall goes something like this.
The daughter of one of the owners had a pet ape that
she adored and when her lover jilted her she decided
to kill herself in a secret room above the Great Hall.
s she went through the hidden doorway her poor ape followed
her and when she closed the door the ape became trapped
in the hallway. The girl killed herself and since no
one knew of the apes where-abouts, the ape slowly starved
to death waiting for his beloved owner to rescue him.
Some say they can hear him scratching on the door desperately
trying to get her attention.
The Great Hall is also said to have a
couple of phantom duellists who perpetually reinact their
conflict as if they were paid performers. In the Tudor
room you can find a grey lady of unknown origins rocking
in a chair. It is said that one person actually thought
she was a living being and it was not until she approached
her that she realised she was a ghost.
