The Devoted Ghostly Servant
Constructed in 1508 by Sir John Spencer and remodelled
in the 18th century this magnificent home has been
home to the Spencer family for almost 500 years. This
is the childhood home of Princess Diana, Princess of
Whales and is also her final resting place since her
passing in 1977.
The story of the ghost haunting the Spencer
home is actually a very touching one. Apparently Lord
Lyttleton was very afraid of fire and could not rest
thinking that someone would fall asleep with their candle
still burning and the house would catch on fire. He made
it one of his grooms duties to go into every room in
the house nightly and make sure that all of the candles
had been extinquished.
About two weeks after this devoted groom
died, a house guest by the name of a Mr. Drury awoke
to find a groom in his bedroom carrying a lantern staring
at him. Mr Drury took offense to the intrusion and in
the morning informed Lady Lyttleton of what happened
the night before and told her he thought the groom might
have been drunk. Lady Lyttleton promptly informed him
the groom was most certainly not drunk, he was dead and
he was a very devoted groom who was still doing is nightly
duties even after his death.
